Docker open sources container runtime as containerd

Docker (the company) had previously released part of its engine as runC, which was meant as an OCI-compliant runtime for Docker (the containers), but the community had come to the conclusion that the functionality wasn’t sufficient. Now the company says “Docker is spinning out its core container runtime functionality into a standalone component, incorporating it into a separate project called containerd,” — pronouced “container-D”, for “container daemon” — “and will be donating it to a neutral foundation early next year. This is the latest chapter in a multi-year effort to break up the Docker platform into a more modular architecture of loosely coupled components.”

Cisco to shut down Intercloud

Cisco made a big noise about its Cisco Intercloud Service (CIS), a federation of multiple OpenStack-based clouds. Now the company has decided that the initiative is counter to its long term goals, and is shutting it down in March.
